Goodfellas, directed by Martin Scorsese, is a biographical crime film that chronicles the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill and his friends and family in the Italian-American mafia from 1955 to 1980. The film offers a gritty and unflinching look at the allure, violence, and eventual unravelling of the gangster lifestyle, based on the real-life experiences of Hill.

Did You Know?

The film is based on the 1985 non-fiction book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese. Many of the scenes involving improvisation came from rehearsals where Scorsese would let the actors ad-lib, and the best lines were then incorporated into the script. Joe Pesci won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Tommy DeVito; his acceptance speech is one of the shortest in Oscar history, simply saying, "It's my privilege. Thank you." The famous "Funny how?" scene between Henry Hill and Tommy DeVito was largely improvised by Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta, based on a real-life anecdote Pesci experienced.
