Godzilla vs. Destoroyah is a Japanese kaiju film directed by Takao Okawara, and it serves as the dramatic conclusion to the Heisei era of the Godzilla franchise. The film sees Godzilla's nuclear heart beginning to overload, turning him into "Burning Godzilla" and threatening to cause a catastrophic meltdown that could destroy the planet. As this crisis unfolds, a terrifying new creature, Destoroyah—a sentient colony of microscopic life forms mutated by the Oxygen Destroyer weapon that killed the original Godzilla in 1954—emerges and proves to be one of Godzilla's most formidable and malevolent adversaries.
Did You Know?
This film was heavily marketed in Japan with the tagline "Godzilla Dies." It was intended to be the final Japanese Godzilla film for a decade, as Toho, the studio, planned to hand the reins over to Hollywood for an American trilogy. Destoroyah's origin directly connects this film to the very first Godzilla (1954), making it a direct sequel to the original movie's events. The film also features the grown-up version of Baby Godzilla from previous films, now called Godzilla Junior. The "Burning Godzilla" design, with its glowing red patches, has become one of the most iconic and popular alternate forms of the character.
