Gangs of New York is a historical crime drama directed by Martin Scorsese, set in the gritty, lawless Five Points district of 1860s New York City. The story follows Amsterdam Vallon, a young man seeking revenge against Bill "The Butcher" Cutting, the ruthless gang leader who killed his father. Amidst a backdrop of gang warfare, political corruption, and class conflict, Amsterdam’s quest becomes entangled with the violent birth of modern America.

Did You Know?

Daniel Day-Lewis’s portrayal of Bill the Butcher is widely considered one of the greatest villain performances in film history and earned him an Academy Award nomination. He stayed in character off-camera and learned period-accurate butchery techniques to fully inhabit the role. The elaborate Five Points set was built from the ground up in Italy, complete with historically researched details. Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz both trained extensively for their roles, and Scorsese spent over two decades developing the film. Gangs of New York was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and helped revive large-scale historical epics in Hollywood.
