Directed by Richard Attenborough, this 1982 biographical epic is a sweeping portrayal of the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who would become known as Mahatma Gandhi. The film begins with his experiences as a lawyer in South Africa, where he first developed his philosophy of non-violent resistance, and follows his journey to becoming the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. The film was a monumental critical success, winning eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley's transformative lead performance.

Interesting Tidbit: For the recreation of Gandhi's funeral scene, director Richard Attenborough managed to gather an estimated 300,000 volunteer extras, making it one of the most populous scenes ever filmed. The scene was shot on January 31, 1981, the 33rd anniversary of Gandhi's actual funeral. This massive undertaking holds the Guinness World Record for the most extras ever used in a motion picture.
