This is a powerful 1912 woodcut print titled Horses by Franz Marc, a leading figure of the German Expressionist movement and co-founder of the influential Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group. The artwork presents a dynamic, semi-abstract vision of several horses intertwined with the landscape. Using the raw, bold power of the woodcut technique, with its stark contrasts of black and white, Marc fractures and simplifies the animals' forms to convey not their physical appearance, but their spiritual energy and harmonious rhythm with nature.
Historical Tidbit
Franz Marc created this woodcut for the legendary Blaue Reiter Almanac, the seminal publication that served as the manifesto for the art movement he founded with Wassily Kandinsky. Marc believed that animals were more beautiful and spiritually pure than humans, and he sought to create an art that could express the world from their perspective—a concept he called the "animalization of art." This print of horses, one of his favorite subjects, was therefore not just a picture of animals; it was a powerful symbol of the pure, vital energy he hoped would revitalize a corrupt and materialistic world. Tragically, his life and work were cut short when he was killed in World War I in 1916.
