Fist of Legend is a Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Gordon Chan, starring Jet Li. A remake of Bruce Lee's 1972 classic Fist of Fury, the film follows Chen Zhen, a Chinese martial arts student living in Japan in 1937. After learning that his master has been killed in a fight, he returns to the Jingwu school in Shanghai to investigate. He soon discovers a web of conspiracy, deceit, and racial tension between the Chinese and the occupying Japanese forces, leading to a series of explosive confrontations as he seeks to uncover the truth and defend the honor of his school.
Did You Know?
The fight choreography, created by Yuen Woo-ping, is widely considered a landmark in martial arts cinema, blending traditional kung fu with more modern, realistic kickboxing techniques. The film intentionally downplays the wirework common in many Hong Kong films of the era to create a more grounded and impactful fighting style. Quentin Tarantino is a notable fan of the film and has cited it as a major influence, particularly on the action sequences in The Matrix, for which Yuen Woo-ping also served as the martial arts choreographer. Jet Li's character, Chen Zhen, is a fictional creation but has become a Chinese folk hero, portrayed by numerous actors, including Bruce Lee and Donnie Yen.
