Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a psychedelic road movie directed by Terry Gilliam, based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson. The film follows journalist Raoul Duke and his eccentric attorney Dr. Gonzo as they descend into a surreal, drug-fueled odyssey through Las Vegas in search of the American Dream. What begins as a reporting assignment turns into a chaotic exploration of excess, disillusionment, and madness.
Did You Know?
Johnny Depp lived in Hunter S. Thompson’s basement for months to prepare for the role, even borrowing the author's personal clothes and using his actual cigarette holder in the film. Thompson made a cameo appearance and was heavily involved in the adaptation, giving it his stamp of approval. The film’s trippy visuals and warped cinematography were achieved through practical effects and distorted lenses rather than heavy CGI. Though it received mixed reviews upon release, it has since become a cult classic, beloved for its wild energy and faithful depiction of Thompson’s “gonzo journalism” style.
