Ex Machina is a cerebral science fiction thriller written and directed by Alex Garland. The story follows Caleb, a young programmer invited to a secluded research facility to administer a Turing test to Ava, a highly advanced humanoid robot created by the enigmatic tech CEO Nathan. As Caleb interacts with Ava, questions about consciousness, manipulation, and trust arise, blurring the lines between human and machine. Minimalist and thought-provoking, Ex Machina is a gripping meditation on technology and morality.

Did You Know?

Alicia Vikander, who plays Ava, trained extensively in ballet to give the character's movements a mechanical yet graceful quality.

The film was shot in just six weeks, with most of the scenes filmed at a remote hotel in Norway to emphasize isolation.

The visual effects for Ava’s translucent robotic body were created on a modest budget and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Director Alex Garland insisted on using practical sets and lighting whenever possible, combining natural realism with sleek futurism.

Ex Machina marked Alex Garland’s directorial debut and quickly established him as a leading voice in modern science fiction.
