Directed by Steven Spielberg, this 1987 epic coming-of-age war film is based on J. G. Ballard's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. It tells the story of Jamie "Jim" Graham, a young boy from a wealthy family living in Shanghai during World War II. After the Japanese invasion in 1941, Jim is separated from his parents and eventually becomes a prisoner of war in an internment camp. The film follows his harrowing struggle for survival as he is forced to grow up amidst the chaos and brutality of war. The movie is notable for being the breakout performance of a 13-year-old Christian Bale in the lead role.
Interesting Tidbit: The author of the source novel, J. G. Ballard, has a brief cameo in the film. He can be seen as one of the guests at the extravagant costume party early in the movie before the invasion of Shanghai. His presence adds a poignant layer to the film, as he is literally a background figure watching the events that are based on his own traumatic childhood experiences.
