This 1989 comedy-drama, directed by Bruce Beresford, won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Set in Atlanta, Georgia, the story begins in 1948 and spans 25 years, chronicling the relationship between Daisy Werthan (Jessica Tandy), a wealthy and stubborn elderly woman, and Hoke Colburn (Morgan Freeman), the good-humored man her son hires to be her chauffeur after she crashes her car. The film is a poignant study of their slowly evolving friendship as they overcome their differences and navigate the changing social and civil rights landscape of the American South.

Interesting Tidbit: The film is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning off-Broadway play by Alfred Uhry. Both Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy had extensive experience with their roles before filming began. Freeman had originated the role of Hoke Colburn in the original 1987 stage production. While Jessica Tandy did not play Miss Daisy in that initial run, she was intimately familiar with the material. Her performance in the film earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making her, at age 80, the oldest winner in that category's history.
