Donnie Brasco, directed by Mike Newell, is a crime drama based on a true story. The film follows FBI agent Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp), who goes deep undercover in 1970s New York City, infiltrating the mob under the alias "Donnie Brasco." He gains the trust of Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino), an aging, low-level hitman who vouches for him. As Donnie becomes more entrenched in the mafia's world and his relationship with the increasingly dependent Lefty deepens, he finds the lines blurring between his identity as an FBI agent and the gangster he pretends to be, putting both his personal life and his mission at risk.
Did You Know?
The film is based on the 1988 autobiographical book Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia by the real Joseph D. Pistone. The real Pistone served as a consultant on the film to ensure authenticity. The phrase "Fuhgeddaboudit" (forget about it), used frequently in the film, was largely improvised by the actors and became an iconic part of its dialogue; it was later added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Al Pacino and Johnny Depp reportedly became very close during filming, mirroring the mentor-protégé relationship of their characters. To prepare for the role, Johnny Depp met with the real Joe Pistone several times.
