Did You Know?
Matt Smith underwent knee surgery shortly before filming began. To accommodate his recovery, the script was adjusted so that the Doctor sustains a leg injury early in the episode, allowing Smith to perform with a cane.
Peter Capaldi's first line as the Twelfth Doctor, "Kidneys!", was improvised during filming. Jenna Coleman described his delivery as akin to singing.
The episode was directed by Jamie Payne, who had previously directed the Series 7 episode "Hide".
Originally, the storyline involving the Doctor aging over centuries on Trenzalore was intended to span an entire series. However, due to Matt Smith's decision to leave the show earlier than anticipated, the narrative was condensed into this single special.
