The lovable yellow Minions weren’t part of the original script. They were added later in development to soften Gru's character and add comic relief—and ended up becoming the franchise’s biggest stars. Steve Carell, who voices Gru, created his distinctive Eastern European-style accent after trying several different versions. He described it as a mix of Ricardo Montalbán and Bela Lugosi. With a production budget of around $69 million, the film grossed over $540 million worldwide and launched one of the most successful animated franchises of all time. The gibberish spoken by the Minions (called “Minionese”) is a mix of various languages, sound effects, and nonsense words. Voice actor Pierre Coffin—who also co-directed the film—provided the voices for nearly all of them. The creators were influenced by both spy movies and classic slapstick cartoons, which explains the film’s balance of high-tech gadgets and zany humor.
