This acclaimed 1989 drama, directed by Peter Weir, is set in 1959 at the elite and conservative Welton Academy. It tells the story of John Keating (Robin Williams), an unconventional new English teacher who uses poetry to inspire his students to challenge conformity, question authority, and "seize the day" (Carpe Diem). As the boys resurrect the "Dead Poets Society," they learn to pursue their passions and live life to the fullest, leading to both profound self-discovery and tragic consequences. The film was praised for its powerful message and Williams's celebrated dramatic performance.

Interesting Tidbit: Robin Williams's comedic genius led to a great deal of improvisation on set. According to the cast, roughly 15% of his dialogue was ad-libbed. Director Peter Weir encouraged this, often filming Williams doing one take as written and another where he was free to improvise. One of the most famous improvised moments is the scene where Keating impersonates both Marlon Brando and John Wayne performing Shakespeare, a spontaneous bit of comedy that was kept in the final film.
