Clerks, written and directed by Kevin Smith, is a black-and-white independent comedy that offers a slice-of-life look at a single day for two disenchanted store clerks in New Jersey. The film follows the witty and long-suffering Dante, who is called into work at the Quick Stop convenience store on his day off, and his best friend Randal, the snarky and abrasive clerk from the adjacent video rental store. Over the course of the day, they procrastinate, antagonize customers, engage in hilariously vulgar and pop-culture-laden conversations, and contemplate their dead-end lives.
Did You Know?
This was Kevin Smith's debut film, which he famously financed by maxing out multiple credit cards and selling his extensive comic book collection. The movie was filmed for just over $27,000 in the actual convenience and video stores where Smith worked in real life; filming could only take place at night after the stores closed. Because they shot at night, the script's explanation for the convenience store's shutters being closed is that they are jammed. Many of the actors were friends of Smith's, and the film introduced the world to the iconic characters of Jay and Silent Bob (played by Jason Mewes and Smith himself, respectively). The film's sharp, dialogue-driven script and raw, low-budget aesthetic helped launch the independent film movement of the 1990s.
