Johnny Depp based his portrayal of Willy Wonka on a combination of reclusive celebrities, creating a very different and more peculiar version of the character than in previous adaptations. Freddie Highmore, who played Charlie, was personally chosen by Depp after they worked together on Finding Neverland. Danny Elfman composed the film’s score and wrote songs using the original lyrics from Roald Dahl’s book, giving each child's downfall a distinct musical style. Real chocolate rivers and edible sets were partially created on the soundstage to add authenticity to the fantastical world.
