The character Baymax was inspired by real-world soft robotics research observed at Carnegie Mellon University. His inflatable design was created to be non-threatening and huggable, embodying comfort and care. The city of San Fransokyo was modeled as a blend of San Francisco and Tokyo, combining American and Japanese architectural styles with an East-meets-West aesthetic.The animation team developed over 700 unique crowd characters and a proprietary rendering system called Hyperion to manage the film’s rich and detailed visuals. Big Hero 6 won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and became the highest-grossing animated film of 2014.
