Directed by Tim Burton, this 1988 fantasy-comedy classic follows the recently deceased couple, Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin), who find themselves haunting their own country home. When their house is sold to the insufferable Deetz family, their amateurish attempts to scare them away fail. In desperation, they enlist the help of a crude and chaotic "bio-exorcist" from the Netherworld named Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton). The film is celebrated for its inventive visuals, dark humor, and Keaton's iconic, manic performance.
Interesting Tidbit: The film's iconic dinner party scene, where the guests become possessed and perform Harry Belafonte's "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)," almost featured a different song. The original script called for the characters to perform a song by The Rascals. However, actor Jeffrey Jones suggested "Day-O," and Catherine O'Hara, who played Delia Deetz, was also a huge fan of Harry Belafonte. They convinced Tim Burton to make the change, creating one of the most memorable and beloved scenes in the movie.
