Avatar is an epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron, set in the lush, alien world of Pandora. James Cameron first wrote the script for Avatar in 1994 but had to wait over a decade for technology to catch up to his vision. The film pioneered new motion capture techniques, particularly in capturing actors’ facial expressions. The Na’vi language was created from scratch by linguist Paul Frommer, combining elements of multiple Earth languages to sound both familiar and alien. Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time upon its release, holding that record for nearly a decade. The film's success led to the creation of several sequels and even a themed section at Disney’s Animal Kingdom called Pandora – The World of Avatar.
