This is an exhibition poster for a 1990 showing of "Andy Warhol Cars" at the Kunstmuseum Bern. The poster features a work from Warhol's iconic "Cars" series, showcasing his signature Pop Art style. The image of a vintage Mercedes-Benz racing car is repeated in a four-panel grid, with each panel rendered in a different, vibrant, and non-naturalistic color scheme. By applying his mass-production aesthetic (the silkscreen process, repetition, and bold colors) to a symbol of luxury engineering, Warhol elevates the automobile to the status of a 20th-century cultural icon, alongside his famous portraits of celebrities and Campbell's Soup Cans.
Historical Tidbit
This "Cars" series was one of Andy Warhol's last major works and began as a corporate commission from Mercedes-Benz in 1986 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the automobile. The original plan was vast: 80 works depicting 20 different models from the company's history. Warhol was fascinated by the project, but tragically, he died unexpectedly in February 1987 after completing only about half of the commissioned pieces. The series was left unfinished. This 1990 exhibition poster is for one of the major posthumous showings of this final, incomplete masterpiece, representing a poignant intersection of art, commerce, and mortality.
