This is the iconic Cow screenprint by Andy Warhol, a seminal figure of the American Pop Art movement. The artwork is a bold, graphic portrait of a cow's head, rendered in Warhol's signature non-naturalistic and vibrant color palette. In this version, a fluorescent pink cow is set against a shocking chartreuse (yellow-green) background. Created using the commercial silkscreen process, the image has a grainy, mass-produced quality that intentionally blurs the line between fine art and commercial advertising.
Historical Tidbit
The idea for this famous artwork was not Warhol's own. In 1966, art dealer Ivan Karp suggested to Warhol that he should paint something pastoral, like cows, to break from his usual themes of celebrity and consumer goods. Warhol, amused by the sheer banality and absurdity of the idea, embraced it. His true genius, however, was in the presentation: he designed the print not to be framed, but to be used as wallpaper. For its debut exhibition, he covered the entire Leo Castelli Gallery in New York with this cow print, from floor to ceiling. By turning his art into a repeatable, decorative pattern, Warhol playfully subverted the very definition of a "masterpiece," treating it with the same mass-market disposability as ordinary home decor.
