Directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, Airplane! is a landmark 1980 slapstick comedy that parodies the disaster movie genre. When the flight crew on a passenger jet falls ill from food poisoning, a traumatized ex-fighter pilot with a fear of flying is forced to land the plane safely. The film is famous for its rapid-fire delivery of surreal humor, puns, and visual gags, and for revitalizing the career of Leslie Nielsen as a comedic actor.

Interesting Tidbit: The film is not just a parody but is, in fact, an almost shot-for-shot comedic remake of a serious 1957 disaster film called Zero Hour!. The creators of Airplane! purchased the rights to the Zero Hour! screenplay and retained its entire plot structure and even some of its original dialogue. The line "We have to find someone who can not only fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner" appears in both movies, showcasing how Airplane! turned dramatic tension into pure absurdity.
