12 Monkeys, directed by Terry Gilliam, is a science fiction film set in a post-apocalyptic future where a deadly virus has wiped out most of humanity, forcing survivors to live underground. A convict, James Cole (Bruce Willis), is sent back in time to 1996 to gather information about the virus's origin, believed to be linked to an enigmatic group known as the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, in hopes of finding a cure.

The film was inspired by Chris Marker's 1962 French short film La Jetée. Brad Pitt received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the eccentric Jeffrey Goines. Director Terry Gilliam, known for his distinctive visual style, initially wanted to cast Nick Nolte as James Cole and Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey Goines. Bruce Willis reportedly took a pay cut to work with Terry Gilliam, whose work he admired.
